LILA B. HESS

Lila B. Hess, 87, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and formerly of Rocky Mount, Va., and Atglen, Pa., died March 27, 2010. She was born to Park and Malinda Smoker Buckwalter in Coatesville, Pa.

She married John R. Hess Jr. on Jan. 27, 1945. They owned and operated the former Spring Grove Dairy of Atglen for 21 years.

She attended West Fallowfield schools and graduated in 1940 from Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, Va. She graduated from the former Coatesville Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She was a member of Fountain Faith Fellowship of Fountain, Colo., and in the past was a member of Blue Ridge Chapel, Rocky Mount, Va., former Caln Fellowship, Downington, Pa., Sandy Hill Mennonite Church of Coatesville, Pa., and Maple Grove Mennonite Church of Atglen. In the past she worked as a night supervisor at the former Morris Hall of Parkesburg, Pa., as a nurse for Dr. Johnson of Christiana, Pa., and retired from Harrison House of Christiana as a night supervisor nurse in 1990. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, knitting and quilting.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, John R. Hess; a son, John R. “Jack” Hess III and his wife, Ann Crandall Hess, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Rhoda Umble of South St. Paul, Minn.; five granddaughters and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six siblings, Blanche Umble, John, Nathan, Nevin, Galen and Park Buckwalter Jr.

Funeral services were held at Maple Grove Mennonite Church of Atglen, Pa. Burial was in River Corner Mennonite Cemetery, Conestoga, Pa.
