MRS. BERTHA HESS

Bertha Amelia (nee Dettweiler) Hess was born at Halstead, Kansas on Easter morning, April 1, 1877, a daughter of Jacob Dettweiler and Elizabeth (Jotter) Dettweiler.

On June 18, 1893, she was baptized and recieved [sic] into the First Mennonite church of Halstead by Rev. Christian Krehbiel. She remained a member of the Mennonite Church all her life. On October 15, 1903, she was joined in holy matrimony with Dillman B. Hess in the First Mennonite church of Halstead by the late Rev. Jacob S. Krehbiel. These bonds were broken by death after 48 years, one month and 20 days.

Two children were born to this union, Pauline Cherbak of Alta Loma, Calif. and Samuel Monroe Hess, pastor of the First Baptist church of Oroville, Calif. Besides these and her husband she leaves a sister Mrs. C. L. Toevs of Los Angeles, a brother A. H. Dettweiler of Halstead, Kansas and eight grandchildren.

She loved her Lord and her Bible. Her life's Verse was Galatians 6-9, "Be not weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not."

She took to her bed Sept. 2. She never complained of pain. One of her last desires was to go to Oroville to her son and grandchildren. She stood this trip splendidly with no bad results and was happy with the children there. All the immediate relatives were present at her bedside when she quietly and without any struggle went home to be with the Lord. She brought her age to 74 years, eight months and five days.

On Tuesday evening she came out of the coma for a short time and said "Daddy, I am a messenger." The granddaughter asked. "What is your message grandma." She replied. "Be ye reconciled to God." May all who hear or read permit that message to sink deeply into their hearts.

Funeral services were held at the Bethel Mennonite church, Winton, Calif. on Dec. 10, 1951, with Rev. M. J. Galle officiating. — The Family.
