Samuel H. Hertzler

Belleville, Pa. — Samuel H. Hertzler, aged 64 years, 6 months and 8 days, passed quietly away at his home in Allensville at 4:15 o'clock, Thursday morning, July 14. Death was caused by cancer after a six months illness.

The deceased was a son of the late Samuel and Sarah (Yoder) Hertzler and was born in Berks county on January 6, 1868.

Mr. Hertzler and Miss Rebecca E. Byler were united in marriage on February 5, 1901.

He was a member of the Conservative Mennonite Church, always being very active and faithful in all his religious and church activities. He was one of Big Valley's most highly respected citizens and his passing will be mourned by a large host of friends and associates. He was very active in arranging the plans for the Hertzler reunion which is held annually in different sections of the state.

Surviving the deceased are his widow, five daughters, one sister and five brothers. The daughters are Sadie of White Hall, Mrs. Harvey Yoder of Belleville, Mrs. Alpha Smucker, Mrs. Jesse Harrtzler and Mrs. Ray Peachey, all of Allensville. The sister and brothers surviving are Mrs. Lydia Esh of Coatsville, John of Lancaster, Joe of Elverson, Dan of Morgantown, Crist of Hesston, Kansas, and Isaiah of West Liberty, Ohio.

Funeral services were held July 16 at 2 o'clock with services in the Locust Grove Church, near Belleville. Services were conducted by J. B. Zook of Allensville, John S. Mast, Lancaster County and J. D. Yoder of Belleville. The services opened with the reading of "Asleep in Jesus" by Rev. John S. Mast who also read the 90th Psalm. Rev. Mast conducted the first part of the services, using as his text the II. Cor. 4th chapter. Rev. Jonas D. Yoder spoke briefly on Job 14.

Burial was made in the cemetery near the church.

Pall Bearers were Valentine Yoder, Samuel K. Yoder, Jonas Peachey, Gideon Glick, Jacob Z. Peachey and Samuel D. Kanagy. — Belleville Tiems.
