Veteran Missionary To Argentina Died

BISHOP T. K. HERSHEY WAS SUPERINTENDENT OF MISSION 1917-1942

Goshen, Ind.— Bishop Tobias K. Hershey, missionary to Argentina under the (Old) Mennonite Church for more than 30 years, died at his home here Oct. 31after an illness of a year and a half. He was 77.

Services were conducted at the Yoder funeral home here Friday forenoon, Bishop Sanford Yoder in charge, after which the body was sent to Kinzers, Pa. for final services and burial at the Hershey Mennonite church on Saturday.

A native of Lancaster County, Pa., Bishop Hershey served churches in Ohio and Colorado before sailing for Argentina in 1917. He was superintendent of the Argentine Mennonite Mission from 1917 to 1942, retiring from the field in 1949. He was widely used as an evangelist, and in1936 pioneered in mission work among Spanish-speaking peoples in South Texas. he was the author of several books on missions and evangelism.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mae Hertzler, whom he married at Concord, Tenn. in 1904; one daughter, Mrs. William Hallman, missionary to Argentina; one son, Lester, missionary in Puerto Rico; six grandchildren and one-great-grandchild; and two sisters.
