MCC mourns CARE leader's murder in Iraq

By MCC News Service

AKRON, Pa. — Mennonite Central Committee leaders expressed their condolences to CARE International and the family of Margaret Hassan, the CARE administrator in Iraq who was murdered after being kidnapped in Baghdad Oct. 19.

MCC has worked with CARE in Iraq. Hassan had helped distribute MCC school kits. MCC workers who have had contact with Hassan admired her commitment and leadership.

Mourning for Hassan, an Irish native and Iraqi citizen who had headed CARE's Iraq office for more than a decade, began after a videotape surfaced that reportedly showed her murder.

"We lament and mourn the passing of one who gave her life for the welfare of others," MCC executive director Ron Mathies wrote to CARE officials. "With you, we are dismayed and outraged at this senseless killing."
