ELMER JUSTUS HARTZLER

Elmer Justus Hartzler, son of Joseph Z. and Mary Ann (Byler) Hartzler, was born in Noble County, Ind. on Nov. 10, 1877, and passed on to his eternal reward Oct. 16, 1958, at the age of 80 years, 11 months and six days.

The family moved from Logan County, Ohio to Cass County, Mo. in 1882, where he grew to manhood. When 18 years of age he accepted Christ as his Saviour at the Bethel Mennonite church, was baptized by Rev. Daniel Driver and received into the church. His first active service in the church was teaching in the Sunday school at the age of 20.

On Feb. 9,1902, he was united in marriage with Sarah L. Dintiman. To this union were born nine children, three of whom preceded him to the better world. Eula and Esther died in childhood and Eli at the age of 16 years, as a result of an accident.

In 1916 he and his family moved from Missouri to Cheraw, Colo. and in 1929 to Colorado Springs, where he resided at the time of his death. On April 13, 1946, Mother Hartzler was called to a better world.

He was always willing to serve the Lord in whatever he was asked to do, serving in the various offices in the church as S. S. teacher, chorister, trustee, elder and deacon. He was faithful in attending the services of the church until failing health prevented regular attendance.

On Nov. 2, 1947, he was united in marriage with Nora Yoder of Colorado Springs. Surviving are his wife Nora; six children, John of Grand Springs, Mich., Nellie, Mrs. Glen Selzer of Protection, Kan., Erma, Mrs. Orlando Unger of Fresno, Calif., Erie, Mrs. Frank O'Driscoll of Colorado Springs, Hannah, Mrs. Fay Dingwell of Denver, Colo., and Daniel of Colorado Springs; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Dr. J. E. Hartzler of Goshen, Ind., Rev. Joseph G. Hartzler of Windom, Kan., Martin Hartzler of Fort Worth, Texas, and Herbert L. Hartzler of Kalona, Iowa; two sisters, Bertha, Mrs. J. Roy Yoder of Garden City, Mo. and Fannie, Mrs.Willie Brenneman of Colorado Springs; also a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Swan Mortuary on Oct. 18, with Rev. Victor Woerz and Rev. L. P. Cassel officiating. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery.
