Served As "Mother" to Large Family

MRS. ANNA MARY HARTZLER, 78, OF BELLEVILLE, PA. CALLED AWAY IN DEATH

Belleville, Pa. — Mrs. Anna Mary Hartzler, 78, well-known resident of the Belleville community, died at the Lewistown Hospital on Oct. 7.

Born near West Liberty, Ohio on April 8, 1878, the daughter of Jacob Z. and Barbara King, she had been a resident here and a member of the Maple Grove Mennonite Church for a period of40 years. Her husband, John M. Hartzler, was a minister of the Maple Grove congregation until his death in 1925 due to a fall from a ladder while painting.

Following his death, Mrs. Hartzler operated a small general store here for a number of years. In addition to raising and educating her own family of six children, she provided a boarding home for more than 50 boys and girls of Mifflin County.

At one time Mrs. Hartzler and her husband were in charge of the Mennonite mission at Fort Wayne, Ind. He also served congregations at Surrey, N. D. and Long Green, Md. before they moved here in 1916.

Surviving are the six children, H. Harold, professor of mathematics at Goshen College; C. Clayton of Belleville; twins, Ethel of Sunbury, Pa., and Eva, professor of chemistry at Juniata College, Huntingdon; Carrie of Newport, Ore.; and Jon M. of Belleville. She also leaves two brothers, John and Ivan of West Liberty, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at the Maple Grove Mennonite Church on Oct. 10, with Rev. Jacob Weirick, in charge. Burial was made in the Allensville cemetery.
