Tragedies Claim Three Lives in Chaco Region

Three tragic deaths injected a note of sadness into joyous preparations for Christmas in Mennonite colonies of the Chaco, it is reported by Mrs. Frieda Kaethler of Filadelfia, Paraguay.

Some weeks ago 36-year-old Peter Harder married and the father of eight children, was plowing with a tractor in Menno Colony when the machine mired in an ant hole. While he was trying to maneuver it out, the tractor overturned and crushed him.

Later, 17-year-old Franz Funk was sitting at the shed of the Menno Cooperative Store as the large Volvo? truck was backing up to the building. The driver was unable to control the brakes, and without warning, the boy's head was crushed between the truck and the building.

More recently news reached Filadelfia that Jakob Friesen, a former Fernheim Colony resident who moved to a location on the Trans Chaco Road, had been shot by a Paraguayan. Detail of the killing were not learned.

The funeral was held at Filadelfia on the Sunday observed as the Day of Decoration. It is the last Sunday of the church year, just preceding the Advent season.

Friesen, about 40 years of age, leaves a wife and two sons.
