● John S. Harder, 91, of rural Whitewater, died Feb. 16 at Wheat State Manor. A retired farmer, he was a member of Emmaus Mennonite Church, rural whitewater. Survivors include son Edgar of Whitewater, daughters Linda Harder of whitewater and Elfrieda Harder of Salina; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Emilie, died in 1992. The funeral was held Feb. 19 at Emmaus Mennonite Church.

JOHN S. HARDER

John Schiller Harder was born April 25, 1901, to Bernhard W. and Minna (Wiebe) Harder on the family farm near Brainerd, Kan. He was the eldest of three children.

He was baptized upon confession of his faith in Christ by Gustav Harder on May 19, 1918, and became a life-long member of Emmaus Mennonite Church, Whitewater, Kan. After his grade school education he studied the preparatory course in Hillsboro for two years, then later spent one year at Biola Bible Institute in California.

On June 8, 1927, he married Emilie Epp at the Emmaus church. They made their home on a farm three miles south of Brainerd. Three children were born to them. He was a farmer, but his greatest love was helping others, teaching Sunday School and missions.

In June 1988 he and his wife entered Wheat State Manor Nursing Home, Whitewater, Kan. His wife died April 16, 1992, after nearly 65 years of marriage. He died Feb. 16, 1993, at Wheat State Manor.

He is survived by one son, Edgar and wife Agnes of whitewater, two daughters, Linda Harder of Colombia and Whitewater, and Elfrieda Harder of Salina, Kan.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emilie; a brother, Bernard G. Harder, and a sister, Linda, who died at age 2.

Services were held at Emmaus Mennonite Church on Feb. 19, with burial at Emmaus Cemetery.
