Well-Known Retired Business, Civic Leader Dies at Freeman

Freeman, S. D. — Funeral services for Jake T. Gross, 78, well-known retired businessman here and long a leader in civic and community affairs, were held May 23 at the Bethany Mennonite Church. Rev. William Unrau, the pastor, officiated.

Mr. Gross died May 20 at the Freeman Hospital after an extended illness. A native of this community, he founded a cream and poultry plant here in 1913. After selling this business to the Farmers Cooperative Assn. in 1929, he established a chain of hatcheries in towns of this area. He also assisted two brothers in establishing additional hatcheries. At the time of his death Mr. Gross still owned the Freeman hatchery.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Harold Gross, Professor of Philosophy at Bethel College (Kansas), and one daughter, Ms. David L. Hofer of Menno, S. D.
