Retired Farmer Of Pretty Prairie Died

Pretty Prairie, Kans. — Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite church Jan. 14 for Jacob J. Graber, 75, well-known retired farmer of this community. He died here on Jan. 11. The services were in charge of Rev. H. G. Nyce, assisted by Rev. Victor Graber and Rev. P. P. Tschetter.

A native of Freeman, S. D., he had lived here since the age of six. He farmed southeast of Pretty Prairie until his retirement six years ago, and was active as song leader, member of the board, and Sunday school superintendent in the local church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Goering, seven children and their families, and seven brothers and sisters.

JACOB J. GRABER

Jacob J. Graber, son of the late John J. and Frances (Preheim) Graber, was born at Freeman, South Dakota May 12, 1877. When he was six years old the family moved to Pretty Prairie, Kans. where he had lived ever since.

He was baptized and received into the membership of the First Mennonite church of Pretty Prairie Sept. 28, 1894, by the late Rev. J. J. Flickinger. He was a faithful member of the church and Sunday school until his death, having served as song leader for many years, as a member of the church and as Sunday school teacher and superintendent.

Nov. 1, 1899, he was united in marriage to Frances Goering by the late Rev. John G. Graber. They farmed southeast of Pretty Prairie until about six years ago, when they moved to town.

Nov. 1, 1949, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and were permitted to remain together for three more years. This union was blessed with seven children as follows: Bernard J. of Murdock; Ed H., Phil J., Frieda, wife of Erwin C. Schrag, and Walter J. J., all of Pretty Prairie; and Margaret, wife of Dave Flickner of Kingman. A daughter, Tillie, preceded him in death, having died in infancy.

Bro. Graber had been in ill health for the last few years. On the morning of Jan. 10 he suffered a stroke and passed away at 8:40 Sunday evening. Jan. 11, at the age of 75 years, seven months and 29 days.

He is survived by his widow and the above mentioned children, 21 grandchildren, seven sisters and brothers as follows; Carrie, wife of Ben A. Schrag of Pretty Prairie; Anna, wife of Albert Kaufman of Burrton; Ida, wife of Amos Flickinger of Pretty Prairie; Henry H. and John J. Graber of Hutchinson, as well as a large number of relatives and friends.

Two brothers and one half brother as well as three half sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 14, one o’clock at the home and 1:30 at the First Mennonite church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Officiating pastors were Dr. Howard G. Nyce assisted by Rev. Victor Graber and Rev. P. P. Tschetter.—Mrs. Jacob J. Graber and family.
