MARIA GOERTZ

Maria Goertz, daughter of Jacob and Anna Schmidt Goertz, was born March 31,1896, in McPherson County, Kansas.

She received her elementary training in the Hochfeld School. She also attended the Hillsboro Bible Academy and was under the instruction of Rev. H. D. Penner. In later years she very fondly remembered her teachers and schoolmates.

She joined the catechism class of her home church under the instruction of Rev. Heinrich Banman and on May 31, 1914, was baptized upon confession of faith in Christ Jesus as her personal Saviour, and was received into the Alexanderwohl Church, whose faithful member she remained until death.

She was a willing worker and enjoyed being useful wherever needed. At one time she was employed in the boarding hall of Freeman Jr. College, Freeman, S. D., which at that time was an academy.

She returned home to be with her mother who was in failing health. This was an act of love without thought of self. She felt it to be a privilege to take care of her parents in the evening of their life.

After father died she continued with great devotion to care for mother for seven more years. After mother's passing in 1947, she remained with her brother Henry in their parental home for which she had great affection. Through the years she lived a quiet, modest and unassuming life, and had a great love for children.

In her youth she enjoyed normal health, but in her later years she suffered from many ailments. The last four weeks of her life, she suffered intensely, especially in the closing days. On Sunday Nov. 17,1957, at 9:45 p. m. her Saviour released her from all sorrow and suffering and took her to her heavenly Home where we hope to meet her again. She reached the age of 64 years, seven months and 16 days.

She leaves to mourn one brother Henry of the home; one sister Margaret and her husband Valentine R. Funk, Lenigh, Kansas; one brother-in-law, P. H. Bergen, Goessel, Kansas; 14 nieces and nephews; three aunts; one great aunt; two great uncles and many friends. (Her parents, two sisters and one brother, preceded her in death.)

Funeral services were held in the Miller Funeral home and in the Alexanderwohl Church the afternoon of Nov. 20 in charge of her pastor, Rev. P. A. Wedel.
