ELMER H. GOERING

Elmer H. Goering was born in Pretty Prairie, Kan., Aug. 21, 1914, to Edward E. and Kate Kaufman Goering. The family moved to Moundridge when he was 4, and he spent the rest of his life there.

After his mother died in 1933, stepmother Lydia Kaufman Goering became a special member of the family. He attended Bethel College and the University of Kansas, graduating with a law degree in 1939. After a short law practice, he returned to farming, his first choice. In more than 50 years of active farming, he worked in partnership with his father, his brother Marvin, and his two sons.

On Sept. 1, 1944, Elmer married Gladys Graber in Freeman, S.D. Two sons were born to them, Jon and Wynn. together they enjoyed each other, travel and good books. Elmer was proud of his family, a good father and husband.

Elmer was baptized in First Mennonite Church of Christian when he was 14 and remained a member all his life. He held many positions of trust and service in the local church and the Western District Conference, as well as in the community. Elmer was one of the founding members of the Central Kansas Water conservation Association and the Little Arkansas River Watershed District. He was much interested in conservation practices both on his own land and agriculture in general.

In Moundridge he was active on the boards of several local businesses. He served the city as a councilman and finally as city administrator, a position he found rewarding. In the last years of his life his civic involvement took the form of daily walks in town where he enjoyed greeting people. He died at home on April 25, 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; and two sons, John of Howard, Kan., and Wynn and his wife Ardie of Albuquerque.
