EDWIN J. GOERING

Edwin J. Goering, son of John C. and Adina (Wedel) Goering, was born Nov. 19, 1903 on a farm southwest of Moundridge, Kan. He died Jan. 24, 1980 at the age of 76 at the Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie.

He grew up on McPherson county, where he attended nine years of school at Pleasant Ridge and Mound.

He was baptized on June 20, 1920 by Christian J. Goering and became a member of the Hopefield Eden Mennonite Church near Moundridge. In 1943 he transferred his membership to the First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie, where he remained a member until death.

He was married to Hilda Schwartz on Apr. 22, 1928, and they were permitted to share 43 years together until she died in 1971. The first 14 years of married life were spent on a farm near Elyria, Kan., then in 1942 they moved to Pretty Prairie to continue farming.

His church was very important to him. He served on the board of trustees, as a Sunday School teacher, and enjoyed involvement with Mennonite Men. He was on the board of directors of Prairie Sunset Home at the time it was constructed. He was deeply dedicated to the Lord and spent much time in Bible reading and prayer.

In addition to farming he did custom butchering. He enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing, and being with people, especially his children and grandchildren.

He suffered a serious stroke early in 1979, and moved to Prairie Sunset Home upon release from the hospital.

He is survived by a son, Curtis Eugene of Pretty Prairie; two daughters, Virleen (Mrs. Fred) Unruh of St.Catherines, Ont. and Janice (Mrs. Marlow) Unruh of Hesston; five brothers, Phil, John and Martin of McPherson, Ben of Moundridge and Art of Newton; four sisters, Bertha Kaufman and Lorene (Mrs. Carl) Stucky of McPherson, Lillie (Mrs. John Allen) Culler of North Lima, Ohio and Ellen (Mrs. Harold) Schrag of Moundridge; and six grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a sister and his daughter Betty.
