Ontario Businessman, Church Worker Died

FOUNDER OF CHEESE BUSINESS AT ST. JACOBS CALLED AT AGE 48

St. Jacobs, Ont. — One of the largest funerals ever held at the St. Jacobs Mennonite church took place on Sunday afternoon for Freeman S. Gingerich, well known cheese merchant, who passed away on Thursday night, July 7.

Mr. Gingerich was well and favorably known throughout Waterloo County and other areas because of his cheese business. From a small beginning his business grew that “Freeman’s Cheese” was known at most of the county fairs as well as at one or two cheese stands at markets, including the large Hamilton, Ontario market.

Mr. Gingerich was also well known as a “committee man,” having served on many boards and executives such as the Rockway Mennonite High School Board, the City Missions Committee o the (Old) Mennonite Church, the Nonresistant Relief Organization, the Conference of Historic Peace Churches, and several others. He was also remembered for several clothing and shoe drives for the Mennonite Central Committee which he directed.

Mr. Gingerich died at the age of 48. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Horst; three sons, David, Ronald and Raymond; and one daughter, Kathleen.

Taking part in the service were Paul Martin, Osiah Horst, Bishop C. F. Derstine, Bishop Roy Koch, and C. J. Rempel.
