Catherine (Swartzendruber) Gingerich was born in Johnson County, Iowa, March 18, 1852 and died at her home in Kalona, Iowa, June 19, 1930 ages 77 years, 9 months and 1 day.
She accepted Christ as her personal saviour in her youth and was a faithful member of the East Union Mennonite church at the time of her death.
On March 5th, 1871 she was united in marriage with Joseph C. Gingerich. Sixteen children were born to this union, ten of whom remain: Mrs. Elvina Keiser, Wayland, Iowa; Daniel and Edward, Turner, Mich., Frederich, Aurora, Oregon, Amos, Versailles, Mo., Simon, Wayland, Iowa, Joseph, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Walter, Portland, Oregon, Emma at home, Ezra of Iowa. Her husband preceeded [sic] her in death April 3rd 1928. For sometime she was afflicted with a weak heart and hardening of the arteries but nothing out of the ordinary was noticed in her physical condition until May 24th when she did not arise from her afternoon rest, her daughter Emma who was staying with her went to see what was wrong. She found her unconscious. The doctor was called. She had a stroke of paralysis and for several days was unable to talk or take food, but she gradually recovered sufficiently so that she could also take food. At 5:20 Thursday morning June 19, while her attendants were waiting on her she very suddenly and unexpectedly, passed away from heart failure.
She leaves her two daughters, eight sons, one sister, Mrs. C. S. Yoder, Chapell, Nebr., two brothers, Elias Swartzendruber, Manson, Iowa, and Shem Swartzendruber, Noble, Iowa, and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
The funeral was held at the East Union church near Kalona, Iowa, conducted by the home ministers, assisted by J. L. Herschberger and Edward Diener. Texts used Heb. 9:27; Jno. 5:24-25.
Interment by the side of her husband in the cemetery nearby. — Wayland News.
