Manitoba Couple Met Death in Tragic Highway Accident

PETER GIESBRECHT & WIFE WERE ON TRIP TO B. C.; NINE CHILDREN SURVIVE

Bergfeld, Man. — Mr. and Mrs. Peter Giesbrecht, who left here for British Columbia in mid-June to assist in the fruit harvest, both met a tragic end on Wednesday, July 1, near Sumas, B. C., when the jeep in which they were traveling failed to make a curve and upset into a ditch filled with water. Mrs. Giesbrecht was drowned, being pinned beneath the car. Mr. Giesbrecht died in a hospital at Abbotsford, B. C., a few days later. They were 38 and 40 years of age, respectively.

Three daughters of the family escaped injury in the accident, one of them, Martha Giesbrecht, saving her father from immediate death by drowning by holding his head above the water until help arrived.

Nine children, ranging in age from three to 18 years survive the parents. Mrs. Giesbrecht, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Unrau, is also survived by two brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services were conducted in the Rudnerweide church here on Thursday, July 10, and were attended by a large number of friends and relatives. A tent was erected on the church yard to accommodate part of the congregation. Bishop David Schulz of Altona officiated, assisted by Rev. G. Penner, Rev. Wm. P. Heinrichs, and Rev. P. P. Heinrichs.
