Mary, daughter of Charles and Carolyn Kaufman, was born January 1, 1875, at Yankton, S. D., and departed this life December 12, 1938, at the Galloway hospital in Anthony, at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 11 days.
Her early life was spent in Yankton. Later her parents moved to Vermillion, Ohio, and Blissfield, Michigan. At the age of 14 she united with the United Brethren church through the holy rite of baptism.
On March 23, 1892, she was united in marriage to Jacob P. Gering with whom she shared the joys and sorrows of this world for nearly 47 years. Following their marriage they came to Murdock to establish their home.
This union was blessed with two children; one infant son who preceded her in death and a daughter, and a niece whom she loved and reared from infancy as her own. She also gave motherly care to a number of motherless nieces and nephews.
She followed her Master in a life of service. She was a beacon light in the community, her daily life being a testimony for her Lord. When the Bethany Mennonite church was organized in 1907, she with her husband were charter members and she remained a faithful member until the end.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband; her daughter, Helen Brown; her niece, Edna Voran; her sisters and brothers: Mrs. Anna Mehnert and Mrs. Fanny Harris, Vermillion, Ohio; Mrs. H. H. Smoll, Jasper, Michigan; Mrs. W. F. Munn, Perrysburg, Ohio; Andrew Goll, Hudson, Michigan; Mrs. George Weniger, Wichita; Mrs. Eugene Weniger, Cleveland; and Mrs. Carroll Sloan, Cleveland; besides a host of friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held at the Bethany Mennonite church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. J. Neuenschwander of McPherson, Rev. P. P. Tschetter of Pretty Prairie and Rev. C. J. Voran of the Bethany church.
