FINAL SERVICES FOR KING GEORGE OF GREECE

THE ATHENS cathedral was the scene of the elaborate funeral service of the Greek Orthodox church last Sunday as Greece’s monarch, George II, was laid to rest.

The king, who was in exile 18 years out of the 25 years during which he held that title, died suddenly of a heart attack on April 1 at the age of 56. He was immediately succeeded by his brother, 45-year-old Prince Paul, who refused to accept the resignation of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Maximos, and asked that body to continue in office.

George’s death came at a time when the nation was the focal point of a diplomatic tug-of-war between the Russian orbit and the western powers. The future of Greece was being debated in London, Washington and Moscow in the light of the proposed U. S. loans to that country and Turkey.
