LEWIS JACOB GARBER
Lewis Jacob Garber was born to Christian J. and Cora (Grove) Garber on Feb. 6, 1895 in Cullom, Ill. As a young man he attended Hesston College Academy and graduated in 1914, this year being the 50th anniversary of that class.
On April 15, 1918 he was united in marriage to Olive Miller at Kalona, Iowa. After their marriage the family moved to Alpha, Minn. and from there to Filer, Idaho. Twenty-five years ago they moved to the Hubbard-Woodburn area in Oregon where they have resided since.
Into their home were born four sons and four daughters: Wayne of Sweet Home , Oregon; John, William, Alice (Mrs. Harold Bender) and Goldie (Mrs. Keith Hungerly), all of the Woodburn-Hubbard area; Elsie (Mrs. Richard Mengershausen) of Grants Pass, Ore.; and Jewell (Mrs. Don Nissly) of Wheaton, Ill. One son, Hugh, preceded him in death. There are 26 grandchildren. Also surviving are his father, C. J. Garber, two brothers, Charles and Frank, and one sister Mary, Mrs. Harold Ely.
Two years ago during a time of illness the family became aware of the weakness of his heart. Following this much of his activity was reduced to work around home. He has spent much of his active life as a farmer, school teacher and carpenter. On Tuesday evening, April 21, he was suddenly called from time into eternity. He reached the age of 69 years, two months and 15 days.
After coming to Oregon 25 years ago the family united with the Zion Mennonite Church where Lewis remained a member until the time of his death. All of the children living in this church area are members of the fellowship, one of his sons, John being a deacon of the church.
The memorial service was held at the Zion Mennonite Church on April 25 with Pastor John M. Lederach officiating. Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence West, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hostetler Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hostetler and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Berkey. Interment was in the Zion Cemetery.
