Samuel Burton Gaines

Samuel Burton Gaines died Sunday afternoon at Bethel hospital following an illness of two weeks. He was 79 years of age.

Mr. Gaines is one of the pioneers of the country having homesteaded in Fairmount township, Butler county near Elbing in 1870 where he resided when he passed away. He came to Kansas from Kentucky, driving thru in a covered wagon.

Surviving him are his seven sons and four daughters, 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His sons are: John of Moberly, Mo., W. H., of Whitewater, S. B. of Burns, Joe M., R. W., and R. W. [sic] of Peabody, T. J. of Newton, and the following are daughters: Mrs. Will Medford of Winona, Mrs. Guy Hall of Newton, Malinda Platson of Montana and Mrs. Otto Weber of Peabody.

The funeral services will be held in the Methodist church in Elbing on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be in the Elbing cemetery.
