Pioneer Immigrant Died at Shafter

Shafter, Calif. — Funeral services were held Friday forenoon, Jan. 27, at the First Mennonite Church for Mrs. Maria Gaede, 91, pioneer immigrant from Russia and a charter member of the local church. Rev. John Bartel officiated, and burial was made in the Reedley cemetery.

Mrs. Gaede, who leaves 99 descendants, died after a heart attack at a Bakersfield hospital.

Born in Russia on Nov. 30, 1864, she came to the United States with her parents when six years of age. She lived in Kansas until her marriage to Rev. Henry J. Gaede. They came to Shafter in 1925.

Surviviing [sic] are five sons, George of Atascadera, Curt of Cloverdale, Jake of Clovis, Henry and John of Shafter; three daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Neuman, Mrs. Bertha Reimer and Mrs. Marie Neufeld, all of Shafter; 30 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
