Well-Known Pastor Died

EVANGELIST, SINGER AND BIBLE SCHOOL TEACHER CALLED AWAY IN DEATH

Wichita, Kansas. — Final services for Rev. John J. Franz, pastor of the Bethany Baptist church here who died suddenly on New Year’s day, took place at the Buhler Mennonite Brethren church on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 4.

Rev. Franz was widely known in Mennonite Brethren communities, having served as an evangelist and singer in many different churches during his early ministry. He attended several colleges and seminaries, receiving his B. D. degree at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary of Chicago in 1927.

In 1911 he served as co-editor with D. B. Towner of the song book, “Zionslieder,” which has been used widely in the M. B. conferences. Following two years as voice instructor at Tabor College, he was employed for a number of years at the Marshall Field store in Chicago, during which time he was active in Christian work.

From 1937 to 1942 he served as an instructor in Bible and music at the Corn, Okla., Bible School, and came to the pastorate of the Bethany church in 1942.

His daughter, Ella Franz, is the piano instructor at Tabor College, Hillsboro, and a brother, L. J. Franz, also resides at Hillsboro. He was 66 years of age.
