Father of Four Dies When Truck Overturns In Front of Train

Hutchinson, Kan. — Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church of Halstead on Jan. 16 for John H. Flickinger, 31, who was killed Jan. 12 in a railroad crossing accident southeast of here.

Mr. Flickinger, who resided at Burrton and was a member of the Burrton Mennonite Church, was on the way to work at Cessna Aircraft in Hutchinson where he was employed as quality control supervisor. As he approached the Santa Fe tracks on a township road, it is believed he saw an approaching east-bound passenger train and put on the brakes of his Volkswagen pickup. Due to ice at the crossing, the truck went into a skid and overturned on the tracks. The train, traveling nearly 80 miles per hour, hit the top of the vehicle.

Survivors include the widow, Leila, and four daughters, Susan, Kelly, Michelle, and Deanne, all of the home; his mother, Mrs. Ella Flickinger of Burrton; five brothers and one sister.
