text of obituary:

ELIZABETH KUHNS FENDLEY

Elizabeth Fendley, daughter of Leonard and Barbara Kuhns was born in Indiana July 24, 1867, and departed this life at Harper, Kansas on May 9, 1955, at the age of 87 years, nine months and 15 days. She suffered a heart attack on the way to Harper, and quietly passed away shortly afterward in the local hospital.

She was united in marriage to John Fendley on Oct. 13, 1896, at Hutchinson, Kansas. Her husband preceded her in death 20 years ago. Her mother and father, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death also. She leaves to mourn her passing her youngest sister, Emma Glassburn, with whom she shared a close, confiding love; also 26 nieces and nephews, and a number of relatives and friends.

She was making ready her departure and she passed away leaving her house in order. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Mennonite church and was faithful in her attendance at Sunday morning wroship [sic]. In her Bible were found some poems of consecration and the printed words of the song, “Jesus, I my Cross have taken, all to leave and follow Thee.” all expressive of a heart yielded to Christ. Her one wish was not to have to linger in sickness and the Lord saw fit to grant that wish.

Aunt Lizzie’s hands were busy hands, until her eyesight became so dim she couldn’t see to sew or read. Piecing quilts and quilting for neighbors and friends was a joyous occupation for her as well as a means of income over a period of years. Her moments of relaxation were always found in caring for her flowers which she deeply enjoyed.

In tribute to loving memories of a dear aunt and grandmother to us, her sister’s children and grandchildren, we can say she truly belonged to us. We bid farewell to one who has so deeply touched our lived, knowing that being absent from the body she is now present with the Lord.

We humbly bow in submission to His will and plan.

Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite church near Harper, with W. R. Nafziger and Waldo Miller in charge. Interment was made in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.
