FORMER REEDLEY BUSINESS MAN, MAYOR, CALLED AWAY IN DEATH

Reedley, Calif. — Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church here Saturday, Nov. 12, for Jacob J. Eymann, 90-year-old retired businessman, who died on Nov. 9.

Mr. Eymann, who came to Reedley from Kansas in 1904, was the city's first mayor and took a prominent part in city and community affairs ever since. His wide interests included banking, retail merchandising, real estate, and developing of the fruit and raisin industry in this area.

Surviving are his wife, four daughters and two sons and their families.

JACOB JOHN EYMANN

Jacob John Eymann of Reedley, Calif., son of Daniel T. Eymann and Babetta Ruth was born Sept. 29, 1870, in Lee County, Iowa. He came with his parents to Moundridge, Kan., in 1881 where he received his elementary education. Here he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized upon his confession of faith in 1886 and became a member of the First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge. Rev. Val Krehbiel officiated.

He came to Reedley, Calif. in 1904. Here he became a charter member of the First Mennonite church. he was an active, faithful member, having served as deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher and in various other capacities.

On May 11, 1921, he entered holy wedlock with Anna M. Vogt at Reedley, Calif. He had been married to Sarah Jones and Lenora Vogt, both of whom preceded him in death.

He earned his livelihood as a lumberman, banker, insurance and real estate broker. He had the unique distinction of being considered a sort of “grandfather” to many who came to him for consultation. He had a great civic interest and worked progressively for community improvements. He served as the first mayor of Reedley, was a member of the city council, and many other organizations.

It was his lot to be bedridden for the last 17 years, but even in this he was an inspiration to all who visited him. During all these years his wife, Anna, faithfully cared for him, making it possible for him to stay at home. He passed on to his eternal reward on Nov. 9, 1960.

The survivors who remain to cherish his memory are his wife, Anna; four daughters, Edyth of Fresno, Neva (Mrs. Wallace Hall) of Pasadena, Gladys (Mrs. Carl Almquist) of Oakland and Kathryn (Mrs. Wilbur Flaming) of Fresno; three sons, Glenn and Robert of Fresno and James of Sacramento; one brother, Ernest of Santa Rosa; and two sisters, Marie (Ms. Irvin Marlar) and Barbara (Mrs. Joe Haldeman; both of Santa Rosa; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
