ERWIN OSWALD EWY

Erwin Oswald Ewy was born on Oct. 25, 1892, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ewy,who lived near Butterfield, Minn. He attended the country school and at the age of 20 moved to the village, where he had resided ever since.

On March 22, 1921, he was married to Alma Linscheid, and to this union three children were born. They are Lowell of Norfolk, Virginia, Lemont of Butterfield, and Mrs.Harold (Celesta) Podolske of Janesville.

Mr. Ewy started in the hardware business in 1912, when he was employed by Kintzi Bros. In 1913 he purchased part of the stock and became a partner, and the firm's name was changed to Kintzi & Ewy.

R. M. Kintzi died and Walter Kintzi became associated with Mr. Ewyin1922 and the name was changed to Ewy and Kintzi. Upon the death of Walter Kintzi in 1941 Mrs. Walter Kintzi remained a partner until 1948, when Lemont Ewy became a partner with his father in the business and the firm was been known as Ewy Hardware.

The deceased was a veteran of World War I, serving for 18 months. From a civic standpoint he did more than his share, serving for 20 years on the local fire department, was a member of the school board for 18 years and for many years was a director of the State Bank of Butterfield.

He was a faithful member of the Butterfield Mennonite Church and was baptized there in June 1908, by Rev. Regier.

Erwin had a way with children that fey people possess. His patience and friendliness made him beloved by all children.

On the day of his death he had been working at the new home of his son Lemont, going there shortly after the noon meal. At 2:30 Mrs. Ewy went to the home and found him dead.

He suffered his first heart attack in April 1956, and was hospitalized for 20 days. He had another slight attack last fall at which time he was in bed for several days.

Besides his wife and children he is also survived by his aged father, 94, of Seattle,Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Agnes) Lunz of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Lester (Sadie) Croskrey of St. Peter and one brother, Ewald Ewy of Mankato.

He was preceded in death by his mother, who died May 10, 1955; and two brothers, Peter Jr., and Henry, who passed away Feb. 12, 1957.
