DANIEL J. EWY

Daniel J. Ewy, 83, died April 15, 2002, in Fresno, Calif. He was born on June 21, 1918, to Reinhold and Matilda Bachmann-Ewy and was raised on a farm near Parlier.

The family descended from Swiss Mennonites with roots in the early days of the Reformation, a people who valued their independence and their religious belief highly and for which they sometimes paid dearly.

From his earliest days, he attended First Mennonite Church of Reedley, joining the congregation in baptism. He was active in the youth group, young people’s retreat program, Sunday School classes and the church choir and men’s chorus.

His formal education started at rural River View Elementary School. He continued in Reedley High School and Reedley Junior College. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

He taught three years at Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. After leaving Bethel he went to Stanford University for graduate work. He taught 37 years in the department of mathematics at California State University, Fresno.

He served 12 years on the board of Kings View Corp., a number of years as chairman of the board. He also served as a member of the board of directors of Bethel College, retiring in 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Ewy; four children, Annette Percival and her husband, Tim, of Reno, Nev., Richard Ewy and his wife, Kathy, of Clovis, Phyllis Tappe and her husband, Allan, of Moraga, and Gordon Ewy of Fresno; two brothers, Raymond and Arnold Ewy, both of Reedley; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances.
