MRS. EMILIE RUTH EWERT

Mrs. Emilie Ruth Ewert, age 76, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Ruth, died on Tuesday, March 8, at 8:00 p.m. in the St. Boniface hospital, St. Boniface, Man.

Mrs. Ewert was born in Summerfield, Illinois, on February 26, 1873. There she spent her first three years of childhood. Her parents then moved to Halstead, Kansas, where she received her elementary education, attended the Mennonite Seminary, and became accomplished in music. She was later employed in a printing house at Newton.

On August 29, 1895, she married Rev. Benjamin Ewert, then a teacher at Edenburg school, near Gretna, Man. While living at Edenburg, Mrs. Ewert went to Gretna weekly to give piano lessons. In 1902 the young couple moved to Gretna where they lived during the first three years in the old M. C. I. (then the M. E. I.) school house and boarded students. For some time Mrs. Ewert was employed as piano teacher by the M. C. I. She was also an active member of the Mennonite sewing circle, and a member of the Bergthaler church.

The couple was blessed with five children: Emma, Mrs. Peter Drummond, Vancouver, B.C.; Amanda and Adolf at home; Harold, in Winnipeg; and Amanda’s twin brother who died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Ewert celebrated their silver wedding in 1920. In 1921 they moved to Winnipeg and during the last years have lived at 23 Moxam Court, River avenue, Winnipeg. Their golden wedding was celebrated in 1945 in the South End M.B. church, Juno and William, Winnipeg.

Mrs. Ewert’s funeral was held on Friday, March 11, at 2:00 p.m. in Bethel Mennonite Mission, Winnipeg. The officiating ministers were Rev. I. I. Friesen, who used as text St. John 14: 1 – 4, and Rev. Henry Wall, who chose as text St. John 13: 7. Other items on the program were a vocal solo by Kerr Wilson, and a song by the congregation. Many floral tributes were received from friends far and near.

The bereaved are: her husband, two daughters, two sons, two grandchildren, four sisters, three brothers, one daughter-in-law, and numerous friends.

The pallbearers were: Jacob H. Buhr, Peter H. Buhr, Abram H. Buhr, Peter P. Reimer, G. H. Hiebert and Isaak J. Funk.

Burial was made from Bethel Mennonite Mission to Brookside cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in care of Bardal Undertakers.
