Ride on Scooter Ends Tragically for Two Boys

SERVICES HELD AT ZOAR K. M. B. CHURCH, INMAN, FOR BROTHERS, 14 AND 9

Inman, Kan. — A ride to town on a homemade motor scooter ended tragically last Sunday evening for two sons of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Esau, who live about two miles southwest of Inman.

David Esau, 14, and Stephen Esau, 9, were killed when their scooter was struck by a car about a mile south of Inman on Highway K61. Double funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the Zoar K. M. B. church, Rev. Arnold Ensz in charge.

The brothers had ridden their scooter to Inman on Sunday afternoon to show it to their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Peters. Mr. Peters, a former mechanic, had helped them build it.

The boys left for home about dusk. About one-fourth mile from the corner where they would have turned off the highway, they were struck from the rear by a south-bound Hutchinson motorist who said he was blinded by lghts [sic] of an oncoming car.

The boys' parents and five brothers and sisters were also at the Peters home during the afternoon and planned to follow them home with the car to provide light. However, they were delayed when more visitors came, and arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after it happened.

Surviving in addition to the parents are sisters Naomi, 17, Barbara, 12, and Carol, one, and brothers Phillip, 16, and Wesley, 13; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Peters and Mr. and Mrs. John W. Esau, all of Inman.
