Retired Language Teacher Dies at Hillsboro

Hillsboro, Kan. — Funeral services were held at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church June 1 for Dr. BartelE. Ebel, 77, a pioneer resident here who served for 35 years as a teacher of languages at Redlands University in California. He died May 30 at the Salem Hospital, having suffered a stroke in 1959 from which he partially recovered. Born in Russia, Mr. Ebel was brought to this community by his parents as an infant. He was a graduate of McPherson College, received the Master's degree from Kansas University, attended Harvard, and held a doctorate from Stanford University. He was ordained to the ministry while serving a Baptist church in Boston. A long-time member of the Baptist Church, he transferred his membership to the Hillsboro M. B. Church in July 1960. He and his wife, the former Katherine Hiebert, had lived here since January 1960.
