Drowning Tragedies in Maryland And Virginia Claim Four Lives
TWO YOUNG FATHERS AND TWO BOYS 10 AND 14 YEARS OLD LOSE LIVES IN DOUBLE DROWNINGS
Fentress, Va. — Sorrowing relatives and friends from a wide area attended double funeral services at the Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church here Sunday, July 30, for Clyde Bergey, 28, and his nephew Donald Dickerson, 10, who drowned in the waters off Mundun Point [sic Munden Point], Va. on July 27.
A farewell outing was being held at the Point in honor of Mrs. Roy Dickerson and family before their departure for Florida, Mr. Dickerson having died three weeks earlier. Her son Donald, accompaning [sic] Mr. Bergey and five-year-old twin sons on a boat ride, either jumped or fell from the boat with an inner tube.
When the youth was unable to stay up, Bergey jumped in to try to save him, and both went down. Bergey's body was not recovered until the next morning.
Donald is survived by his mother, four brothers and six sisters. Bergey leaves his wife, the former Helen Dickerson, the twin sons, thee [sic] little daughters, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Titus Bergey, and two brothers.
Mechanicsville, Md. — A swim in a farm pond near here by an Amish carpenter crew ended in tradedy [sic]
Fourteen-year-old Noah Byler, a non-swimmer, was wading when he stepped into a deep hole and began calling for help. Daniel J. Esh [sic Eash], 24, swam to his aid but drowned trying to save the youth.
Eash is survived by his wife, the former Katie Yoder, two small sons, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Eash. The Byler youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Crist E. Byler. Funeral services for both were held on July 27.
