Wall-Known Low German Playwright Dies at 82

Saskatoon, Sask. — Arnold Dyck, 82 — who resided in Canada from 1923 to 1954 — died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hedwig Knoop, at Darlaten, West Germany on July 10.

Born at Hochfeld, Nikolaipol, Russia on Jan 19, 1889, Dyck studied art at Munich and Stuttgart, Germany as well as at St. Petersburg and Moscow and then taught this subject at the Nikolaipol High School.

After immigrating to Canada, Dyck held the editorships of the Steinbach Post and the Mennonitische Volkswarte and also wrote a five-volume novel, “Verloren in der Steppe” (Lost in the Steppes of the Ukraine) which he illustrated himself.

But he became best known for his humorous Low German plays which have been presented in many Mennonite communities and schools in the U. S. and Canada.
