Widely Known Congo Missionary Dies
ALMA DOERING WAS AMONG PIONEERS OF CONGO INLAND MISSION
Elkhart, Ind. — Miss Alma Doering, one of the most widely known missionaries to Africa and a native of Inman, Kansas, died in St. Petersburg, Fla. on July 12 at the age of 81, it has been learned here.
She was one of the pioneers who established the Congo Inland Mission and served with the C.I.M. from 1912 to 1927, after which she founded the Unevangelized Tribes Mission. The latter grew rapidly under her administration, but after her retirement it disband. The stations have been taken over by other missions.
Miss Doering was effective as a deputation worker and was said to have raised over one and a half million dollars for missions during her life-time as well as recruiting hundreds of missionaries. She visited many Mennonite communities during the 1920's and 1930's.
