Farm Accident Fatal to Kansas Youth

Halstead, Kan. — A farm accident near here on Aug. 21 claimed the life of Wilferd [sic Wilfred] Roy Dirks, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert C. Dirks.

The boy was in the field helping his father and a brother, Frank, unfold a spring tooth harrow when one section of the harrow unexpectedly dropped down, striking him in the upper back. Several teeth pierced the chest cavity and severed a large artery. He died about an hour later at the Halstead Hospital.

The youth would have entered the 5th grade at the Hesston Grade School. Besides the parents he leaves two brothers, Raymond and Frank, both of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Schmidt of Halstead and Verna, also of the home, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dirks, Halstead.

Funeral services were held Friday forenoon at the Grace Mennonite Church near here.
