RETIRED FARMER DIED AT PAWNEE ROCK

Pawnee Rock, Kan. — Funeral services for Jacob A. Dirks, 79-year-old retired farmer of this community, were held at the Bergtal Mennonite church near here Sunday, Oct. 30, Rev. Victor Sawatzky in charge.

Mr. Dirks died at St. Rose hospital on Oct. 27 after being ill one week. He leaves his wife, Carrie, eight children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.

JACOB A. DIRKS

Jacob, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Dirks, was born on a farm near Pawnee Rock, Kansas on April 8, 1876, and departed this life after a short illness at the St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend, Kansas, on Oct. 27, 1955, at the age of 79 years, six months and 19 days. He lived on a farm north of Pawnee Rock his entire life.

He was baptized and joined the Bergthal Mennonite Church June 3, 1900, and remained a faithful member until his death. He served the church in many capacities, giving unselfishly of his time and talent for the cause of Christ and the furtherance of His Kingdom, which gave him much joy. He served as church board member, superintendent of the Sunday School, was active as song leader, and held an office in the Hilfsplan for many years, even up to the time of his death.

On Dec. 5, 1900, he was united in marriage to Caroline Ratzlaff. To this union were born eight children. He was a kind husband and affectionate father, cherishing his home and family.

He leaves to mourn his departure his widow Carline and daughter Evelyn of the home, Chester and Dan of Dodge City, Harvey and Fern (Mrs. Oliver Smith) of Pawnee Rock; Roy, Mae (Mrs. Steve Anderson), and Mattie (Mrs. Harry Smith) of Great Bend; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One grandson and one daughter-in-law preceded him in death. He also leaves two brothers, John and Nathan, of Pawnee Rock, three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Glassco and Mrs. Mae Eskam of Cimarron, Mrs. J. J. Unruh of Pawnee Rock, and a host of friends.
