Great-Grandmother Dies in 99th Year

Lancaster, Pa. — Funeral services for Mrs. Abram Diffenbach, one of Lancaster County's oldest residents, were held Nov. 26 at the Mellinger's Mennonite Church. She was in her 99th year.

Death came at the General Hospital here on Nov. 22, two weeks after she had suffered a fractured hip in a fall.

Before the accident Grandmother Diffenbach was still active and attended church services and community events. She was the oldest member of the Mellinger's church and had lived in this area for 95 years. She was the former Rebecca Zimmerman.

A farmer's wife for much of her life, Mrs. Diffenbach attributed her long life to hard work. In recent years she spent much time sewing and reading. She enjoyed recounting her memories of the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge by union forces the Battle of Gettysburg.

Her survivors include five children, 24 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
