PIONEER RESIDENT OF CANADIAN COMMUNITY DIES AT AGE OF 90

Winkler, Man. — One of the pioneer residents of this community, Mrs. Peter Dick, died here recently at the age of 90. She and her first husband, Abram Kroeker, came to this vicinity in 1876, 70 years ago, entering by Red River steamer through Emerson. The Kroekers homesteaded at Hoffnungsfeld, two miles from Winkler, and the railroad now runs over their original homestead.

Mrs. Helena Kroeker Dick (nee Wiens) was born in South Russia on May 13, 1856. Her marriage to Mr. Kroeker occurred in 1875, and he died in 1906. In 1908 she married Peter Dick, who died in 1943.

There are a totau [sic] of 162 descendants of Mrs. dick, including 12 children, 95 grandchildren, and 55 great-grandchildren. The surviving children include: Mrs. J. B. Dyck, Winkler; Mrs. H. H. Neufeld, Winnipeg, Abram, Peter and Nettie Kroeker of Winkler; Mrs. G. G. Kornelsen, Steinbach; Jacob Dick, Winkler; Mrs. Abram Thiessen, Delmany, Sask.; Mrs. H. H. Penner, Mrs. Frank Brown, and Abram and John Dyck of Winkler.

Funeral services took place at the Mennonite Brethren church here on May 21 Rev. H. S. Voth officiating, assisted by Rev. J. J. Siemens and Dr. A. H. Unruh.
