WILLIAM F. DETTWEILER

William F. Dettweiler, 80, died Sunday, Jan. 31, at his home in Upland, Calif. after a short illness. He was born at Halstead, Kansas on August 8, 1879, and grew to manhood there.

On Dec. 10, 1905 he was married to Lena Buhr, also of Halstead. In 1913 they with their family came to Upland to make their home.

For many years Mr. Dettweiler operated an awning and canvas shop, but had lived in retirement for several years. He was a member of the First Mennonite church for 47 years and a member of the “Wanderers Welcome” Sunday school class since its organization.

A heart condition manifested itself about a year and a half ago, but he was able to take his daily walks and visit his sick friends until a few days before his passing. The end came unexpectedly when on Sunday he fell ill and suddenly succumbed to a heart seizure. He had been an active church member, being reelected several times as deacon. In his younger years he held other responsible positions in the church.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. James Ruud, with whom he had made his home since the death of his wife in 1943; two sons, Willard V. of Claremont, Calif. and Marlin J. of Ontario, Calif.; one granddaughter, Kathlene Dettweiler; two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Moser of Glendale, Calif. and Miss Marie Dettweiler of Halstead, Kan.; four brothers, A. C. Walter and Carl of Halstead, and Ed Dettweiler of Reedley, Calif.

Rev. Paul Goering conducted funeral services on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 3, with entombment following in Bellvue mausoleum.
