Steinbach Publisher Dies Suddenly

GERHARD S. DERKSEN WAS EDITOR OF THE "STEINBACH POST"

Steinbach, Man. — Funeral services were held at the Steinbach Mennonite Church on April 16 for Gerhard S. Derksen, 69, publisher of the "Steinbach Post" who died unexpectedly of a heart attack on April 12. He had worked as usual and collapsed upon arriving home from the office.

Mr. Derksen was widely known in Mennonite communities throughout the prairie provinces as editor and publisher of the German weekly paper.

He was born in Russia, attended school at Choritiz [sic Chortitza] and Petersburg, and graduated from the University of Jena in Germany. He was a school principal in Russia before coming to Canada in 1932. He became editor of the "Post" and purchased the business in 1936, founding Derksen Printers Ltd.
