David Derksen

Mt. Lake, Minn. Nov. 15 — David Derksen, the seventeen-year old son of Mrs. Frank Derksen of this city died Monday morning at eight o'clock, as the result of a seven day siege of the deadly influenza and complications of heart trouble. The young man was a Sophomore in high school, beloved by his fellow students and the faculty and hundreds of friends, as well as the members of his family, grieve his untimely death. David was a basketball player, and would have been one of the mainstays on the team this winter, if he had lived, judging from his past performances.

He was taken ill on November 5th with the flu and soon passed into a state of semi-consciousness. Just a week later, on Monday, November 12th, at eight o'clock in the morning, he passed into the Great Beyond.

The high school was dismissed Wednesday afternoon, so as to permit the student body to attend the funeral services, which were held from the M. B. Church, here in the city. Rev. N. N. Hiebert, Rev. John F. Thiessen and Rev. A. J. Wiebe spoke at the services. Interment was in the local cemetery.

David has gone through a series of misfortunes during the short period of his life. two years ago, his leg was broken when a tree fell upon it. However, the injured limb mended rapidly, and he was handicapped only very slightly.

He was born on September 23, 1911, thus reaching the age of seventeen years, one month and nineteen days.

He leaves to mourn his death his widowed mother, five brothers and four sisters, besides a host of school friends and other acquaintances. — Mt. Lake, Observer.
