Santa Fe Shopman Killed Last Tuesday

— Mr. Ed. Dellenbach, formerly a member of the Arlington, Kan., Mennonite Church, met sudden death in the Santa Fe shops here in Newton last Tuesday noon. He and another mechanic were working at the pit with a pair of nine ton driver wheels and journal (axle) from one of the giant locomotives. A hoist had been attached and the wheels were to have been turned about. The hoist slipped and the wheels, urged forward by the counter-balances which had been placed near the top of the wheels, started to roll forward. Dellenbach was in their path and could not escape. He was struck and crushed by the journal as the wheels crashed over into the pit, he being carried along in. His chest was badly crushed.

After being taken from the pit he was conscious for a few minutes; then, before the ambulance or Dr. R. S. Haury, Santa Fe physician, arrived, he lapsed into unconsciousness. An hour after the accident he died on the X-ray table at the Bethel hospital. The body was taken to Partridge, Kan., where burial was made Friday afternoon.

Mr. Dellenbach was a young man, not much past thirty. His wife had died of the Flu in 1919. Two young children survive him.
