• Cornelius W. Claassen, 84, longtime banker here, died Friday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Axtell Christian Hospital. He had been at his desk at the Kansas State Bank as usual when he became ill and collapsed early Friday afternoon. Born at Brainerd, he attended Bethel Academy and Wichita Business College, and began employment at the Kansas State Bank at the age of 18. He served successively as assistant cashier, cashier, and vice-president, and headed the bank as president from 1941 to 1961. For the past 10 years he had been chairman of the board. Survivors include his widow, Addie, a resident of Presbyterian Manor; three sons, Walter C., president of the bank here, Lawrence L. of London, England and Maurice L. of Great Bend; one daughter, Mrs. Donovan Smucker of Waterloo, Ont.; two brothers, Ted and John, and one sister, Mrs. Karl Richert, all of Newton; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Claassen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where the funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon.
