NEWTON & VICINITY

A mother and her son died within hours of each other Sunday, Apr. 18, in the Newton area. Marie Busenitz, 92, died at the Bethel Home for the Aged early in the morning, and Alfred Busenitz, 65, died at his farm home southeast of Newton in the afternoon. Services for Marie Busenitz took place Apr. 20 at the First Mennonite Church, Newton, with Andrew Shelly and James Cox officiating. Born Marie Suderman, she was married in 1912 to Gerhard F. Busenitz in Newton. He died in 1957. The service for Alfred Busenitz, a farmer-stockman, took place Apr. 21 in the Emmaus Mennonite Church, Whitewater, with Eldon Busenitz in charge. He was married in 1944 to Esther Wiebe, who survives. Marie Busenitz is survived by a son, Karl of Newton; a sister, Anna Suderman of Newton; a brother, Herman Suderman of Inman; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. One son, Gerhard, preceded her in death. Alfred Busenitz is survived by his widow; his brother Karl; three sons, Leroy of Elbing and Dennis and Milton of the home; three daughters, Carolyn of Wichita, Judy of the home and Phyllis Ranfeld of Elbing; and three grandchildren.
