NATHANIEL J. BURKHOLDER

Nathaniel J. Burkholder, son of J. J. and Katharine Schmucker Burkholder, was born April 28, 1873, in Howard County, Ind., and departed this life on Oct. 3, 1957, at Harper, Kansas, at the age of 84 years, five months and five days.

He accepted Christ as his Saviour in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church. He was a faithful member of the Crystal Springs Mennonite Church at the time of his death.

On July 31, 1900, he was married to Mary Ann Reber, who preceded him in death on April 14, 1953. To this union were born nine children.

Surviving him are three daughters, Carrie, Mrs. Russell Waterbury of Wichita, Kansas, Kate, Mrs. Chas.. Barber, and Nettie, Mrs. Wayne Jacobs, both of Harper, Kansas; six sons, Chris of Kalona, Iowa, Elmer of Attica, Kansas, Jake, Clarence, Charles and Lloyd, all of Harper, Kansas; 31 grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs Susan Schletzbaum, Mrs. Ida Miller, and Mrs. Callie Leitzel, all of Hutchinson, Kansas; one brother, J. R. Burkholder of Whittemore, Mich.;and a host of relatives and friends. Several brothers and sisters and three grandchildren preceded him in death.

Being a devout Christian, he was faithful through the years in taking his family to church and in maintaining family worship in his home. His personal interest in his grandchildren and his affection for them was rewarded in turn by their love and devotion to him.

Funeral services were held Oct. 6 at the Crystal Springs church, Alvin Kauffman officiating. Interment was made in the Crystal Springs cemetery.
