Well-Known Pastor Of Markam, Ont. District Died

L. J. BURKHOLDER WAS FORMER MODERATOR OF ONTARIO CONF.

Markham, Ont. — A large congregation which filled the church to overflowing attended the funeral services here for Rev. L. J. Burkholder, 74, for many years a minister in this district and a former moderator of the Ontario Mennonite Conference.

He passed away at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 19, after a long illness.

For many years Bro. Burkholder had served as conference historian, and was the author of “A Brief History of the Mennonites in Ontario,” published in 1935. He served as moderator of the Ontario Conference from 1914 to 1921, and as assistant moderator of the Mennonite General Conference from 1929-31.

He had been a minister here since the early part of the century, and at one time served three churches, requiring him to travel 12 miles by horse and buggy to reach the services. In his early years he also did evangelistic work in Ontario and the United States.

The final services were conducted by two co-workers, Rev. S. F. Coffman and Rev. Oscar Burkholder. A daughter, Mrs. Alvin Reesor, and one son, Paul, survive.
