Pioneer Missionary To India Dies at Goshen

MRS. MARY Y. BURKHARD FIRST WENT TO MISSION FIELD IN 1900

Goshen, Ind. — Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Y. Burkhard, 77, pioneer Mennonite missionary to India, were held Monday at the Eighth Street Mennonite Church here. Rev. Robert Hartzler, the pastor, officiated.

Mrs. Burkhard had been active until Aug. 25 when she suffered a stroke of paralysis. She was admitted to the Goshen Hospital where she died Sept. 7.

A native of West Liberty, Ohio, she and her husband, Jacob Burkhard, went to India in 1900 soon after their marriage. They were pioneer foreign missionaries of the (Old) Mennonite Church.

Mr. Burkhard died in India in 1906, after which she returned to the homeland with their three small children. She later returned to India for two more terms, serving the last term under the General Conference.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John Bauer of Urbana, Ohio and Mrs. Kenneth McGuffin of Perrysburg, Ohio; a son, Samuel T. Burkhard of Worthington, Ohio; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Miss Anna Yoder, with whom Mrs. Burkhard resided.
