JEROME BURKEY

Jerome Burkey, son of the late John and Sarah Bixler Burkey, was born in Pennsylvania Sept. 29, 1868, and died Feb. 14, 1958, in his home two and one-half miles northwest of Nappanee, Ind. where he had resided since Mar. 15, 1907. He reached the age of 89 years, four months and 16 days.

He was married to Sarah Bachtel on Aug. 27, 1893, near Wakarusa. She passed away June 10, 1918. He married Emma Culp of Wakarusa on June 19, 1921, at Nappanee. She preceded him in death Feb. 27, 1956.

Surviving are a son George of Syracuse, Ind. and daughter Mary Burkey, at home (his eldest son, Charles, preceded him in death Feb. 24, 1937); four grandchildren, Edgar E. Burkey of Elkhart, Ind., John Burkey of Goshen, Grace, Mrs. Homer Wenger of Fentress, Va., and Loretta, Mrs. Melvin Kauffman of Goshen; three great-grandchildren, Bobby Kauffman, Brenda Burkey and Charles Wenger; two brothers, Benjamin Burkey of Wakarusa and William H. Burkey of Edwardsburg, Mich., and numerous nephews and nieces.

He united with the Mennonite (Old) Church near Wakarusa about 68 years ago. He was a member of the North Main Street Mennonite Church for almost 51 years.

He loved his Bible and his Lord until death. His last audible words were, “Help, Lord,” and three hours later he slipped away to be with Him.
