SAMUEL J. BUCHER

Samuel J. Bucher, 91, died May 21, 2010, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, W.Va. He was born April 13, 1919, to Mabel Musselman Bucher and Bela L. Bucher at Wrightsville, Pa.

He graduated from Goshen (Ind.) College and Temple University Medical School. He moved to Harman in 1946 and practiced medicine there until his retirement in 1990. He served as medical director of Nella’s Nursing Home, Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Davis Center, Randolph and Tucker County Health Departments. He delivered several thousand babies, including his three grandsons. He made house calls in Randolph and neighboring counties, even delivering triplets at home. He maintained clinics in Harman, Davis and Riverton. He was one of the founding members of the Mennonite Medical Association, serving as both secretary/treasurer and the editor of the Medical Messenger. He was a member of Riverside Mennonite Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Hostetter Bucher, of Cortland Acres Nursing Home; two sons, S. Jonathan Bucher and his wife, Esther, of Morinville, Alta., and J. Daniel Bucher and his wife, Judy, of Harman; two daughters, Sarah Ellen Myers and her husband, Herb, of Mount Joy, Pa., and Mary Beth Lind and her husband, Lester, of Philippi; a brother, John C. Bucher; two sisters-in-law, Florence Bucher and Eleanor Mininger; three stepbrothers, John Rudy of Lancaster, Pa., Clarence Rudy of Ephrata, Pa., and Paul Rudy of Thomas; two stepsisters, Sarah Sauder of New Holland, Pa., and Nancy Martin of Lancaster, Pa.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Margaret M. Mininger, on March 24, 1987; a sister, Anna Lois Charles; a brother, Harold Bucher; a brother-in-law, Joe Mininger; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Ziegler; and great-granddaughter Nora Myers.

Funeral services were held at Dry Fork Assembly of God Church. Burial was at Laneville in the Hady Cemetery.
