Church Leader, Daughter Killed in Auto Crash

SERVICES HELD AT NORFOLK, VA. CHURCH FOR BISHOP PAUL BRENNEMAN, DAUGHTER MARTHA

Norfolk, Va. — Double funeral srevices [sic] were held at the Beachy Amish Mennonite Church at Kempsville on Jan. 29 for Paul Brenneman, 41, bishop of the congregation, and his 11-year-old daughter, Martha, who were fatally injured in a head-on collision while on route home from church services on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Seriously injured in the crash were two sons, Lloyd Daniel, 9, and Alton Ray, 8, while a daughter Rhoda, 6, escaped with minor injuries. At last report the boys were improving. Mrs. Brenneman and the three youngest children had remained at home due to illness and the oldest daughter, Ruth, had gone home with friends.

The crash occurred within sight of the Brenneman home when a 16-year-old youth lost control of his car and it crashed into the Brenneman vehicle. The youth and his sister were also injured.

Bro. Brenneman was ordained as a minister in April 1955 and to the office of bishop in October of the same year.

Surviving are the wife and mother, Bertha Brenneman, and seven children; Bro. Brenneman's father, Dan Brenneman, three sisters and three brothers.
